Information about the village

The village of Pribylina lies at an altitude of 745 m above sea level, beneath the confluence of the rivers Ra\u010dkov and Bel\u00e1. It was found in 1331. Currently the village with the land area of 8500 ha has 1350 inhabitants.<\/p>\n
The territory of Western Tatras, by which the village is surrounded, escaped from the grasp of civilization and except for several recreational facilities situated in mouths of the valleys visitors have the possibility to hike over the untouched nature, rich in forest fruits and mushrooms. The settlement of Podbansk\u00e9 with the largest Hotel Permon is a part of the municipality and it is a starting point in the eastern part of Western Tatras as well as the western part of High Tatras.<\/p>\n
The region along with Ra\u010dkov\u00e1 and Jamn\u00edcka Valleys provides wide possibilities for hiking and cycle touring in summer, and cross-country skiing and downhill skiing in winter.<\/p>\n
A Museum of Liptov Village – an open-air folk museum, where visitors can view how people lived in the region in the past, is a part of the municipality. Within traditional thematic Sundays attractive programs are organized in the museum, such as Shepherd\u00b4s Sunday, Bee-keeper\u00b4s Sunday, Children\u00b4s Sunday, Sunday of Natives, St. Hubert\u00b4s Sunday etc.<\/p>\n
A car camp ATC Ra\u010dkov\u00e1 dolina with a capacity of 80 tents is situated 4 km from the village. A hostel with a capacity of 44 beds and a restaurant are a part of the ATC.<\/p>\n
Village history
\n<\/b> The first written mention of Pribylina was recorded in 1332, in which the local parish of St. Catherine had been mentioned. Since that year until the abolition of serfdom in 1848, Pribylina remained subordinated to Pongr\u00e1c landlords. The original deed of donation in which Pribylina for the first time is transferred as a property to Andrew, the son of Sere\u013eelov, is located in an archive of family Szentiv\u00e1ny, Li. A. file no.10.<\/p>\n
The second written notice of Pribylina was recorded in 1360. Those years the great transformation was happening throughout Liptov area with regard to the property of yeomen. It was after a battle near the village of Rozhanovce in which Mat\u00fa\u0161 \u010c\u00e1k Tren\u010diansky \u201eLord of River V\u00e1h and Tatras\u201c was defeated by army of the Hungarian King Karol R\u00f3bert, who was immediately after the victory of royal troops appointed an Earl to Liptov by the King and was gifted a Castle Likava with all possession. This period is described in the mention of Pribylina found in a deed from 1360, issued by the King Louis and which says: … super nova donatione Zentmiklos, Jalochmelledealie nomine Hakalyse, (now Ondra\u0161ov\u00e1 Perbenye (Pribylina) …… In donation deeds from the 13th and the 14th century it was named like this, which is probably a kind of Hungarized name of Slovak Pribylina.<\/p>\n
The name Pribylina is incorectly derived from a noun \u201ebylina\u201c (herb) with a prefix \u201epri\u201c (next to), but this makes no sense. Rather, the name should be derived from the fact, that Pribylina is located by the river, originally named \u201eBiala \u2013 now Bel\u00e1\u201c. That means that Pribylina is located by the river Biala, and \u201ePribilina\u201c might have arisen from this name. Pribylina with an \u201eypsilon\u201c originated later. Well, it seems that the point of view of Prof. PhUr. J\u00e1n Stanislav, which is expressed in his work \u201cLiptov dialects\u201d, is closest to the truth. With respect to the colonization origin later, the name of Pribylina means new colonists (the word \u201epriby\u201c is used till today). And that\u00b4s why it should be written with \u201ey\u201c letter.<\/p>\n
A period of serfdom and feudalism in Pribylina arose out of the situation in the upper Liptov. Inhabitants of Pribylina and their properties were an ownership of the aristocracy and they were unutterably exploited. It is worth mentioning that in 1709 there was a fight between \u201ekurucs\u201c and imperial troops in Belansk\u00e1 Valley and at \u0160vihrov\u00e1. The battles took place in and around the village and neighbouring villages of Pribylina and St. Peter. Pribylina was burned in these battles. The effort of inhabitants to correct the injustice carried out by their lords and the fact that they sent several complaints to the ruler between 1781 and 1843, is also noteworthy. There exist also a case in documents, in which citizens claimed to have right to produce (burn) domestic brandy (well-known \u010cabajsk\u00e1 borovi\u010dka). Certainly, they were unsuccessful.<\/p>\n
In the revolutionary years 1848-1849 Pribylina also took part in course of events, when on 9th April 1848 a teacher Levite Matej Trnovsk\u00fd was preaching about freedom. For this sermon he was then examined. After the establishment of the Slovak Volunteer Board and the establishment of the Slovak National Council in late August and in the first half of September 1848 in Vienna, inhabitants of Pribylina also took part at the events. And what\u00b4s more, some of them died in the battles. At this time, they excelled in self-defence against a division of Hungarian Hussars at the requisition. Armed with scythes, pitchforks and flails they warded off the Hungarian division and caused them a loss of 14 horsemen. In this chapter it should be registered that a triumphant walk to Vienna had been made by 12 inhabitants from Pribylina (their names are not preserved), led by J\u00e1n Rezn\u00edk – H\u00e1j appointed, to complain at an audience with the Emperor about the rough injustice and violence made by Pongr\u00e1cs against their village.<\/p>\n
The monument was built on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of SNP (Slovak National Uprising). The project was designed by Ing. Kuzma from Bratislava. The granite stone was brought from Tich\u00e1 (Silent) Valley. The construction was carried by John Ra\u010dko \/ Lokaj \/ and Michal Harich. There is a memorial plaque placed on the monument with an inscription \u201ePravde \u017eil som, krivdu bil som, verne n\u00e1rod svoj \u013e\u00fabil som\u201c (“I lived for truth, I fought injustice, I truly loved my Nation”) and names of the heroes fallen in SNP and during World War II: Matej Majzl\u00edk, Matej Bl\u0161ka, Peter He\u010dlo, Urban Klau\u010do and Matej Benko.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
