It is part of dam cascade system on a river V\u00e1h. With a total volume of 360.5 mil. m3 is <\/span><strong>the largest water reservoir in Slovakia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dam was built in the years 1969-1975. During the construction, 13 villages were flooded, of which 12 completely, Liptovsk\u00fd Trnovec partially. A total of 940 families were displaced, representing more than 4,000 inhabitants. The most valuable monuments from the floodplain are transferred to the Museum of the Liptov Village in Pribylina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>The main purpose of the dam is <\/span><strong>flood protection<\/strong><span>, but it also serves for <\/span><strong>the production of electricity<\/strong>, as there are 4 turbines with an output of 198 MW under the dam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>There are a wide range of <\/span><strong>fishing opportunities<\/strong><span> on Liptovsk\u00e1 Mara, and you can also take a <\/span><strong>sightseeing boat trip<\/strong><span> from the port of Liptovsk\u00fd Trnovec. In summer, the dam offers a wide range of <\/span><strong>water sports<\/strong> such as swimming, boating, surfing, jet skiing and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span><\/span><strong>The Ratkovie peninsula<\/strong><span> with adjacent waters is a protected area. Above the dam wall, 2 km south of the village of Bobrovn\u00edk, at the eastern foot of the \u00dalo\u017eisko hill (741.7 m above sea level) is the <\/span><strong>Havr\u00e1nok archeological site<\/strong> &#8211; a Celtic fortification of the Kot\u00edn settlement with a Druid shrine from the 1st century BC.
